Dance Instructor | MiraCosta College | Oceanside, CA

DANCE INSTRUCTOR
Open until filled; first screening Wednesday, February 3, 2010

POSITION AVAILABLE:
One fulltime, tenure-track Dance Instructor position, beginning in August 2010, under the direction of the Performing Arts Department. The individual selected for this position will be subject to assignment at any district facility during any hours of operation. The standard work week is forty (40) hours. The standard instructional work week consists of thirty (30) hours of instructional time, including fifteen (15) LHE (Lecture Hour Equivalent) of instructional assignments with the remaining hours devoted to curriculum development, preparation and student evaluation, five (5) hours of student engagement (of which two (2) hours must be designated office hours as described in the Faculty Handbook), and five (5) hours of departmental activities and collegial governance. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
(E = essential job function)

The duties of the Dance Instructor include:

1) Teaching all levels of ballet, modern, and jazz, as well as other dance technique classes (E)

2) Teaching dance general education lecture courses, which can be taught on ground and online (E)

3) Choreographing dance productions in a variety of styles (E)

4) Coordinating dance production aspects of student performances

5) Participating in the planning, development, and implementation of course curricula, both online and on ground, including student learning outcomes assessments and program review, and other instructional materials in close cooperation with other faculty and staff of the department (E)

6) Participating in the recruitment, community outreach, and the advisement and retention of students (E)

7) Carrying a fair share of department, Academic Senate, and District committee work and participating in faculty governance (E)

8) Teaching assignments may include day and/or evening classes at either campus and/or off-campus locations as part of contract responsibilities

9) Maintaining currency in dance techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

1) Master’s degree in dance, physical education with dance emphasis, or theatre with dance emphasis; OR

2) Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theatre arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music; OR

3) a valid California teaching credential authorizing dance instruction in a community college; OR

4) the equivalent (view the equivalency instructions and guidelines at http://www.miracosta.edu/equivalency.pdf); AND

5) sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal applicant will have achieved the highest level of professional and academic performance as demonstrated by:

1) MFA in dance;

2) Three (3) years teaching experience at the community college level;

3) Ability to teach two or more of the following: Dance History, Dance Appreciation, Dance Cultures of the World, Pilates matwork and reformer;

4) Proficiency to teach and choreograph in one or more of the following: ballet, tap, hip-hop, ballroom and Latin dance;

5) Strong organizational and administrative skills;

6) Knowledge and experience in technical aspects of dance production, including costuming, lighting, and music for dance;

7) Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in Dance and its instructional program;

8) Demonstrated ability to recruit and promote dance in the community;

9) Experience with student learning outcomes;

10) Online teaching experience

EMOTIONAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE POSITION:
Primarily works in a classroom environment, office, or instructional lab; constant contact with students; subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent exposure to impatient, angry and/or verbally aggressive individuals; may work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours; occasional local travel may be requested.

PHYSICAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION:
Moderate to frequent standing, walking, reaching, stretching, bending and stooping; occasional light lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing of objects weighing 35 pounds or less; ability to work at a computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.

Offer of Employment:
An offer of employment to the person selected for this position is contingent upon 1) successful completion of a pre-placement physical exam at district expense, 2) tuberculosis clearance, 3) proof of eligibility to work in the United States, and 4) fingerprint clearance.

Salary Policy and Fringe Benefits:
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based on education and years of experience. The maximum initial placement for experience is Step 10. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study, qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
